5 Classic films that will help you learn English

It’s always really difficult to make up your mind when it comes to watching and improving your English at the same time. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. We’ve seen all the following movies more than a dozen times (we’re sure that so have you) but probably never wondered which ones were really helping you improve your English and which ones weren’t. So, let’s list our favourite 5 classic films that will help you learn a thing or two (vocabulary, structures and expressions) in English.



It’s undoubtedly every late 70s and early 80s kid’s favourite movie. Set in a late 1950s high-school, Grease tells us the never-too-old love story that can happen when you are young and restless. Adapted from the famed Broadway musical, Grease has all the ingredients to having a great time while learning English. Pay special attention to all the songs included in the film, they all have great lyrics.

Yes, the Spielberg classic is a great flick to pick up some great vocabulary. Leaving the fact aside that “Telephone” and “home” are words you already know. It’s a movie that is meant for kids, but even adults will enjoy watching again in English, of course.

The Wizard of Oz

Judy Garland, the child prodigy of the 40s and 50s, stuns us with her breathtaking performance in this American literature classic. Songs, great actors, a very carefully crafted screenplay makes this movie a delight to watch with children as well.

Some like it hot

Now, this is a movie for advanced learners. Challenge yourself to a treat of a movie with this Billy Wilder classic. Hollywood greats such as Toni Curtis, Jack Lemmon and Marilyn Monroe will surely have you laughing at the edge of your seat throughout the whole movie. It’s ok if you think classic movies are boring, nobody’s perfect.

Duck Soup

If you do want to have a good time, improve your English tremendously, admire four of the greatest performers to be seen on tape, then you need to watch the Marx brother’s classic, Duck Soup.

Crazy situations, fast-paced gags, very intelligent humour are all in this movie that is simply an experience on its own.
