Hi everyone, and welcome to Real English Listening, the podcast that helps you sharpen your ear and expand your vocabulary.
Today, we’re talking about something many of us dream about but rarely do — the digital detox. Can switching off really make us happier, or is it just another trend that makes us feel guilty?

We live in a world that’s permanently online. Notifications, emails, messages — our phones buzz like impatient toddlers demanding attention.
So it’s no surprise that more and more people are trying a so-called digital detox: taking time away from screens to reconnect with themselves, nature, and the people around them.

But here’s the paradox. For many, the idea of completely disconnecting feels almost impossible — or even stressful. After all, we rely on our devices for work, navigation, news, and social connection. The moment we put our phones away, a small panic sets in: What if I miss something important?

Psychologists say that this anxiety reveals a deeper issue — not just addiction to technology, but a fear of being alone with our own thoughts. Silence can feel uncomfortable when we’re used to constant stimulation.

However, researchers have also found that even short periods of disconnection can boost creativity, improve sleep, and reduce stress levels. One study showed that people who took a 24-hour break from social media reported feeling calmer and more focused — though they also admitted it was harder than expected.

Maybe the solution isn’t to abandon technology altogether, but to use it more consciously. Turning off notifications, setting “no phone” hours, or taking walks without a device can help us regain control without giving up the benefits of being connected.

In the end, balance might be the real goal — not detox, but digital mindfulness.

o next time you reach for your phone without thinking, try pausing for a few seconds. Notice the impulse. Maybe that tiny moment of awareness is the real detox.

Now, let’s look at some vocabulary and exercises to help you master today’s episode.

buzz: the noise that your phone makes when it vibrates

so-called: used to show that something or someone is commonly designated by the name or term specified

mindfulness: awareness and presence in the current moment

boost: a source of help or encouragement leading to increase or improvement.

regain: obtain possession or use of (something, typically a quality or ability) again after losing it.
